How to pick a business name that sticks

Business name generator FAQ

How do I know if a business name is taken?

Three checks: search the web for the exact name, check domain availability at any registrar, and search your country's trademark database (USPTO for the US, IPO for the UK, CIPO for Canada). Do all three before you commit.

Should my business name include keywords?

Descriptive names ("Bright Candle Co.") tell people what you do instantly, which helps early on. Brandable names ("Lumière") are more distinctive long-term but need marketing to explain. Many successful brands start descriptive and evolve.

How long should a business name be?

One to three words is the sweet spot. Shorter names are easier to remember, fit in logos and domains, and survive being spoken aloud. If it's over four syllables, consider shortening it.

Can I trademark a generated name?

Possibly — trademark offices care whether the name is distinctive and not already registered in your class, not where the idea came from. But generic or purely descriptive names are harder to protect; a trademark attorney is worth consulting before you invest in branding.
