Children count as half an adult for the turkey (they eat less bird) but as a full guest for sides — nobody skips the mashed potatoes.
Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Change the date to plan a Friendsgiving — or Christmas dinner — and the thaw date moves with it.
Defaults come from the American Farm Bureau Federation's 2025 Thanksgiving dinner survey (its 40th annual): a classic dinner for 10 cost $55.18, with a 16 lb turkey at $21.50 — $1.34/lb. The sides default is what is left of that $55.18 after the turkey, spread across 10 guests. Your store's prices win — edit both fields.
A 15 lb turkey covers 10 adults generously, with leftovers. Put it in the fridge to thaw by Sunday, November 22, 2026 and allow 3 hrs 15 min in a 325°F oven.
Turkeys are sold in whole pounds, so the size shown is rounded up to the next whole pound and the cook time is based on that bird. Cook to 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh and breast, then rest 20–30 minutes before carving. Prices are estimates from the 2025 Farm Bureau survey defaults above — not 2026 prices, which are published in mid-November.
How much turkey do you need per person?
The standard rule — the one the USDA and Butterball both work from — is 1 pound of whole turkey per adult and ½ pound per child. That sounds like a lot until you remember that a whole bird is roughly half bone, skin and pan loss: a pound of raw turkey lands about half a pound of meat on the plate. Want the best part of Thanksgiving — the next-day sandwich, the soup, the midnight fridge raid? Multiply by 1.5. That is the "leftovers" setting above, and it is why 10 adults means a 10 lb bird for dinner alone but a 15 lb bird for dinner done properly.
| Guests (adults) | Dinner only | With leftovers |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 lb | 6 lb |
| 6 | 6 lb | 9 lb |
| 8 | 8 lb | 12 lb |
| 10 | 10 lb | 15 lb |
| 12 | 12 lb | 18 lb |
| 16 | 16 lb | 24 lb |
| 20 | 20 lb | 30 lb |
Feeding 16 or more? Consider two smaller birds instead of one giant one — they cook more evenly, finish faster, and give you four drumsticks and double the crispy skin. Very large birds (24 lb+) also dry out at the breast before the thigh is done. This calculator sizes one bird; split the total across two and halve the cook time per bird.
When to start thawing
A frozen turkey thaws safely in the fridge at 24 hours for every 4–5 pounds. A 15 lb bird therefore needs 3–4 days, which for a Thursday, November 26 dinner means it goes into the fridge by Sunday, November 22 — the weekend before Thanksgiving, which is exactly when most people are still thinking "plenty of time." It is the single most-missed step of the whole holiday, and the calculator counts it back from your dinner date so you don't have to.
Forgot? The cold-water method is the safe rescue: keep the bird in its wrapper, submerge it in cold water, and change the water every 30 minutes — about 30 minutes of thawing per pound (a 15 lb turkey is a full day of sink duty, so set alarms). Never thaw on the counter: the outside warms into the bacterial danger zone while the inside is still frozen.
How long to cook the turkey
For an unstuffed turkey roasted at 325°F, plan on roughly 13 minutes per pound — 195 minutes (3 hrs 15 min) for a 15 lb bird. That is a planning number, not a promise: ovens vary, birds vary, and the only verdict that counts is a thermometer reading 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh, the breast, and any stuffing. If you stuff the bird, add about 30 minutes and check the stuffing's temperature too — it must also reach 165°F. Rest the turkey 20–30 minutes before carving; the juices redistribute and the meat stays moist instead of flooding the board.
What Thanksgiving dinner actually costs
The price defaults in this calculator come from the American Farm Bureau Federation's Thanksgiving dinner survey — its 40th annual, published in November 2025 (the 2026 survey is not published until mid-November 2026, so there are no official 2026 figures yet, whatever a headline claims). The 2025 survey put a classic Thanksgiving dinner for 10 at $55.18 — about $5.52 per person — down 5% from $58.08 in 2024 and well under the record $64.05 of 2022. The turkey is the swing item: a 16 lb frozen bird averaged $21.50, or $1.34 per pound, down more than 16% on the year as stores discounted hard to win the holiday shop.
The sides budget default — $3.37 per person — is simply the rest of that survey dinner: $55.18 minus the $21.50 turkey is $33.68 of stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, rolls and pie for 10 people. Both price fields are editable, because your store, your region and your menu will differ; the structure of the estimate is what the survey gives you. If guests are bringing sides (the classic potluck defense), set the sides budget lower and watch the per-person cost fall.

Frequently asked questions
How much turkey do I need per person?
Plan on 1 pound of whole turkey per adult and ½ pound per child for dinner, or 1.5 pounds per adult if you want generous leftovers. A whole bird yields roughly half its weight in meat once bones and skin are accounted for, which is why the number looks high.
When should I start thawing a turkey for Thanksgiving 2026?
Allow 24 hours of fridge thawing for every 4–5 pounds. For Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026: a 12 lb turkey goes in the fridge by Monday, November 23; a 15 lb turkey by Sunday, November 22 (it needs 3–4 days); a 20 lb turkey by Saturday, November 21. The calculator above gives the exact date for your bird.
How long does a 15 lb turkey take to cook?
About 3 hrs 15 min unstuffed at 325°F — roughly 13 minutes per pound. Treat the time as a plan and the thermometer as the truth: the turkey is done at 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh and breast. Add about 30 minutes if it is stuffed.
How much does Thanksgiving dinner cost?
The American Farm Bureau Federation's 2025 survey — the most recent published — put a classic dinner for 10 at $55.18, about $5.52 per person, with a 16 lb turkey at $21.50 ($1.34/lb). The 2026 survey is published in mid-November 2026. This calculator uses the 2025 figures as editable defaults, not as 2026 prices.
Can I use this for Friendsgiving or Christmas dinner?
Yes — change the dinner date and the thaw date recalculates. The turkey math, side quantities and cost structure work for any roast-turkey dinner, any day of the year.
Why does the calculator say to buy two turkeys for big groups?
It sizes one bird, but past about 16 guests a single bird gets unwieldy: very large turkeys cook unevenly and dry out. Two birds totaling the recommended weight cook faster and more evenly — and produce twice the drumsticks.
